What counts as a dental emergency?
If you're not sure whether your problem can wait, that uncertainty is the worst part. As a rule, call us today if you have any of these:
Severe or throbbing toothache that painkillers aren't touching
A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
Swelling in the gum, face or jaw, or a dental abscess
A lost crown, filling or veneer
A knocked-out or loose adult tooth
Bleeding that won't settle
What to do right now
While you arrange to see us, a few things can help.
Toothache
Rinse with warm salty water and take painkillers as directed on the packet. Don't hold an aspirin against the gum – it can burn the tissue. Then call us.
Knocked-out tooth
Hold it by the crown, never the root. If you can, slot it gently back into place and bite on a clean cloth. If you can't, keep it in milk and call us straight away – acting within the hour gives the best chance of saving it.
Broken or chipped tooth
Keep any pieces, rinse with warm water, and hold a cold compress to the cheek for swelling.
Swelling or abscess
This can be a spreading infection and shouldn't be left, even if the pain eases. Call us the same day.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the crown if you have it, and avoid chewing on that side until we've seen you.
Broken denture
Don't try to glue it – shop glues aren't safe in the mouth. Bring it in and we'll repair or replace it, often quickly.

Can I get antibiotics for a dental infection?
If there's an infection, the dentist will assess you and prescribe antibiotics where it's clinically appropriate. Antibiotics aren't always the right answer for dental pain, though, so treating the underlying cause is usually the priority – that's what brings lasting relief.
What if I'm really nervous?
